WHAT IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF BONE CANCER?
Pain in any part of the body can be uncomfortable. In the event of pain, a doctor will usually advise you to seek medical attention. The majority of bone pains are muscular or may be caused by vitamin deficiencies. In some cases, this pain, particularly in the bones, can be a sign of a more serious problem.
Bone cancer is one of the diagnoses in cases where there is swelling, tenderness, or pain in any bone. Bone cancer is most common in the long bones. The classic symptoms of bone cancer are joint/bone swelling and pain that worsens at night. Bone tumors can be cancerous or benign. Bone cancer pain refers to cancerous bone tumors.
HOW MANY TYPES OF BONE CANCER ARE THERE?
There can be different types of non-cancerous or benign bone tumors like:
- Osteoma

- Osteosarcoma
- Chondrosarcoma
- Ewing’s Sarcoma
- Fibrosarcoma
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BONE CANCER?

- Pain intensity increases at night.
- Unintentional Weight Loss
- Fatigue

WHAT ARE THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTS FOR BONE CANCER?
A bone tumor can be diagnosed using an X-ray of the affected joint or bone. An x-ray is the first level of diagnosis, followed by an MRI scan to determine the nature and vascularity of the tumor. A bone cancer specialist or doctor may take a small tissue sample from the tumor and send it for analysis to determine whether a tumor is cancerous or benign. The biopsy results provide the bone cancer doctor with a clear diagnosis of whether or not the tumor is cancerous. If it turns out to be cancer, the next step is to stage the cancer. PET CT scans are the gold standard for cancer staging in India.
Surgery is the most effective option for early-stage of bone cancer treatment. The goal of bone tumor surgery is to remove the tumor and repair the bone. The surgery to remove a bone tumor is performed with a wide margin of clearance to ensure that no cancerous tissue is left behind. Dr. Vikas primarily uses plates and nails for fixation.
However, Dr. Vikas’s main goal is to save the limb by employing various techniques, such as:
ECRT (Extra Corporeal Radiation Therapy)– ECRT (Extra Corporeal Radiation Therapy) – During this bone cancer surgery, the surgeon would remove the affected bone and send it for high-dose radiation therapy. The advantage of this treatment is that the high-dose radiation only affects the affected bone and not other parts of the body. High-dose radiation to the bones ensures that cancer cells are radiated and killed.
Cryotherapy– In this treatment, liquid nitrogen is used to kill cancer cells in the affected bone. This is done in the same session as the surgery. The impacted bone is removed and placed in liquid nitrogen to kill the cancer cells. Following this procedure, the natural bone is stabilized with implants.
Reconstructive surgery with implants- In some cases, the surgeon does not have the above options. In those cases, a bone and muscle reconstruction using an imported implant improves limb function. The implants used in bone cancer reconstruction are special implants that are mostly customized to the patient’s needs.
Apart from surgery, other forms of tumor treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be used. The cancer stage and type determine the choice between chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The 5-year survival rate for patients with primary bone cancer treated by Dr. Vikas Mehra is approximately 80-90 percent. This means that patients treated for bone cancer can expect to live for 5 years or more after treatment.
